Our Condolences to the Levely Family

On Saturday, July 10th QLS lost a close family member, and long time friend Howard Levely who passed away at age 81.

With several children participating in the QLS programs, Howard and his wife Betty have long made their warm presence felt with a smile, handshake, or kind word.  We would now like to extend our support to the family in their time of loss.

Lets let the Levely family know that they remain in our thoughts and prayers!

QLS to Participate in National Event… Self Portraits by People With Disabilities

As part of the ANCOR (American Network of Community Options and Resources) 40th anniversary celebration at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, ANCOR will be presenting an exhibit of self-portraits by individuals with disabilities.

After receiving the invitation for Quality Living Systems to submit one such portrait, word went out to all QLS Clients to see who would like to participate.  There were 18 submissions, but only one could be chosen to send on to the national level. Bethany’s portrait was the one selected.  Everyone who chose to participate really seemed to enjoy themselves.  Thank you to all participants!

All of the self-portraits submitted will be used to create a permanent installation at ANCOR National Headquarters in Alexandria, VA.

Cook-Out/Dance

On Thursday August 5th the conditions turned out great for a fun cook out and some dancing in the Stewart Pavilion.

The weather threatened to rain on the parade, but cleared up in time for everyone to have lots of fun in the sun.  Group Living, Paragon and Hearthstone clients all enjoyed Hamburgers on the Grill by Cook Jamie, Salads, Chips and Cookies.

The surround sound system was set-up to help host a time of dancing to all of the favorite hits.   Overall the event turned out to be a real hit!

Group Enjoys Great Weather and Excitement in Game and Fireworks

The Lansing Lugnuts game against the Fort Wayne Tincaps played host to a group from Group Living and Paragon on Friday, August 6th.

Crissy, David, Gaylla, Heather C., Jim & Tim, were on hand to watch the Lugnuts pull off their fourth of four straight losses.

Nevertheless the weather was fantastic and so too was the excitement as the Lugnuts attempted a comeback in the 9th inning, but fizzled.

The Good News is that the fireworks display afterward did anything but fizzle.  On the particularly dark Summer night the sky lit up with  a vibrant display of colors to the “ooohs and ahhs” of the fans!

Sunny Summer Saturday…

Spectacular Setting for Scouts Picnic In The Park

Contributed by Rebecca Bronson

On Saturday, August 7th, everyone took to the park to participate in the Annual Scout Picnic. There were many different activities to take part in including Volleyball and Ladderball.

After a few rounds of each it was time for lunch, consisting of a grilled Hot Dog, Potato Salad, Corn on the Cob and Potato Chips.  The food was described as “Really Good”.

After lunch it was time for the Watermelon Fight, which seemed to be the favorite as almost everyone participated, with lots of running, screaming, dodging and laughing.

Finally as things settled down there were a few talks of naps, but regardless of what would happen next everyone seemed to have enjoyed their Sunny Summer Saturday in the Park.

Hearthstone Happenings

The week of July 19th was a busy one for Silpers.  The week started with Silpers participating in the QLS Tropical Smoothie Cafe Fundraiser week.

Various Silpers and staff were on hand 4 out of the 5 days. It was great that this was a weeklong event so that all those who wanted to participate were able to do so.

Those who enjoyed the refreshing smoothies and delicious sandwiches or salads included Andy, Dave, Brett, Matt, Dan, Deb, Mary, Linda, Shelley, Mike, John, Ralph, Tony, David, Lee, Patty, Melissa and Lana.

Silpers always consider the restaurant fundraisers the most enjoyable. Many are already asking when the next fundraiser will be held.

SILPERS SOAR

On Thursday, July 22nd, Brett, Mei, Linda, Tony, Dan L. Sherry and Melissa headed north to meet up with Lady Luck at the Soaring Eagle Casino.

Before visiting the slots in anticipation of a "big" win, everyone enjoyed lunch complete with dessert at the Firefly buffet. While only a few of the six actually "won" on the slots everyone was able to spend an enjoyable couple of hours together before heading over to Midland.

Everyone listened to the radio, while some watched the skies, as the group headed to the Dow Diamond to watch the Great Lakes Loons take on the Clinton Lumberkings. As the group waited in line for the gates to open, the skies clouded and the rain started. Everyone was too focused on getting his/her Tiger Legend series Bill Freehan bobble-head to be too concerned with the light rain.

A trip to the Loon Loft to browse and purchase Loons souvenirs was next on the agenda. While the game was still under a rain delay, everyone ordered dinner.

Staff picked up a Loons schedule to choose an alternate game just in case the game was postponed. It was. The group departed the Diamond but not empty-handed. All had the bobble heads, many had various souvenirs and staff had tickets for the August 23rd game.

Despite the weather, everyone still had an enjoyable, relaxing day.

A Real Refresher on the Lanes

In the early evening of July 29th, Brett, Mei, Lee, Lana, Linda, and Shelley all had a great time blasting the pins down at Grand Blanc Lanes.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and were pleased with their scores, some were even shocked at how well they had done.

Some of the things that were said about the event on the ride home included, "that was fun and good practice for next season", "I had a lot of fun tonight, I think I might go back to bowling with the Terminators on Saturdays again". Other things were also said such as " I bowled better tonight then I do during the season", " tonight was good practice for September (which is when the Terminators bowling league starts up again), "Even though I know I'll be sore tomorrow, I still had a good time".

Even though no one ended up landing a turkey as all had hoped, overall everyone in attendance really enjoyed themselves.  Some however are already looking forward to next years summer bowling activity.

Softball Tournament -True Success Story

Dan L. said, " I had the best time at the Kalamazoo baseball tournament". "We took second place, winning our first game and loosing the second". "It doesn't matter if we lost a game, I still enjoyed myself"

GOLF Wraps Up Not With A “Fore” …But With “Five for Five”…        Some Even Make It Onto Twelve

It has been said that all good things must come to an end.  So it was with the 2010 Area 13 Special Olympics Golf Academy at Pierce Golf Course.

For five Wednesday evenings five SILP’ers, namely; Brett, Lana, Matt, Mei, and Patty honed their skills, each with the assistance of a community volunteer.

After the final meeting on August 4th, our golfers enjoyed a pizza party and an awards presentation.  That same evening, ABC 12 filmed Brett and Lana putting on the green.

New Entertainment

Planned for Ice-Cream Social

We are counting on a little warmer weather this year for our 2nd Annual Ice-Cream Social on Thursday, August 26th from 6-8 PM.   Once again we will be using the Stewart Pavilion for this event.

Our entertainment this year is Dee Dee Tibbits.  Dee Dee attended Central Michigan University on saxophone and voice scholarships and graduated with a degree in Music Education.  She taught in the public schools for 13 years.  On the weekends Dee Dee and her husband would sing in various venues and starting their own group in 1979.  About that same time she started collecting and playing 100 year old antique instruments such as the ukelin, marxophone, guitar-zither, mandolin-guitar and the hammered dulcimer.  After 18 years fulltime, six albums and the birth of two daughters, Dee Dee and her husband Russ decided to get off the road.

During the last few years Dee Dee has developed as a hammered dulcimer and Irish whistle player, playing and teaching in her home and at many festivals.  She also plays at many weddings and craft fairs.  She has just released a new CD, "In the Still of Winter".

Please make sure you come out for this event on Thursday, August 26th!

Addressing Risk Management

At their June In-Service, the team of staff members learned of the importance of Risk Management.

The likelihood multiplied by the severity of a possible occurrence was used to identify the top risks that everyone should be aware of and work to prevent.

Additionally, Specific Personal STOP Actions to Minimize/Prevent RISKs were presented and discussed:

Know the Four Simple Steps:

Spot a potential problem or hazard

Take immediate action

Oversee ongoing corrective action

Plan to stay alert.

The following Safe Driving Reminders were also reviewed:

  • Buckle Up
  • Slow Down
  • Look Ahead
  • Back Off
  • Pay Attention
  • Rest Up
  • Plan Ahead
  • Calm Down
  • Know your Conditions
  • Look Behind You.

It was noted that according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the greatest number of accidents are caused by these behaviors:

  • Speeding
  • Driver Distractions
  • Poor Backing Techniques.

In keeping with a directive from Genesee County Community Mental Health the team then offered observed health and safety concerns with corrective action plans.

Vacation Trip To The Zoo

“Opportunity to Rest, Relax and/or Just Monkey Around”

Three vans left town on Tuesday, June 29th  around 8 a.m. bound for a Summer Vacation Trip to Southwest Michigan.  The anticipation, excitement and weather conditions were all optimal for each of the Fun Loving Travelers:

Van 1 –Crissy, Quinyada, Rick, Roger, Jim & David M.

Van 2- Patty, Sherry, Shelley, Lee and Melissa

Van 3- Dan L, Debbie, DeeAnn, Glen, Dave F, Andy & Brett

A full itinerary included:

  • Kalamazoo Country Inn Hotel – The overnight accommodations provided an opportunity to cool off and relax in the Indoor Swimming Pool and Hot Tub.
  • Air Zoo – There was plenty to see and do here. In addition to the more then fifty aircraft on display, the Michigan Space Science Center is housed at the Air Zoo.  Some took advantage of the Amusement Park Style Rides while all had an opportunity to purchase souvenirs in the Gift Shop.
  • Kalamazoo Kings Baseball Game – The minor league Kings took it on the chin from the Gateway Grizzlies 8-2 in this exciting evening game.  Though there were not a lot of fans out for the game, there were a number of entertaining activities and giveaways throughout.
  • Binder Park Zoo- The trip home included a stop at the Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek. Who knew one could take a shuttle train and soon find them-selves on a safari-style tour of the habitat of Wild Africa?  It was here that some were able to actually feed the Long Neck Giraffe.

When asked what they liked best about the trip the responses were quick and most revealing about the good time that was had by all:

  • Kalamazoo Country Inn Hotel Pool

Ø       “Racing from one end of the pool to the other”

Ø       “David splashing us with his feet”

Ø       “Playing tag”

  • Air Zoo

Ø       “Kalamazoo Gal Plane”

Ø       “Moving seats during the show”

Ø       “Airplane Rides”

Ø       “Throwing Balls in the Movie”

  • Kalamazoo Kings Baseball Game -

Ø       “Being outside”

Ø       “Our team scoring”

Ø       “The sound of the ball hitting the roof.”

  • Binder Park Zoo-

Ø       “Feeding the Baby Giraffe”

Summer Signals More Quality Family Time

With summer in full swing there is a lot of opportunities for traveling and visiting.

Many individuals have already been able to visit with family:

Brian went to spend a week at a cabin with his Dad.

Craig went to Chicago for a week to stay with his brother Ken, and got to see Dave as well.  He came back with a big smile so he must have had a nice time.

Chanon was able to go with his mother to visit family in Thailand.

Crissy went to her Mothers home and visit with Mom, Dad and her brother’s family in from out of the country.  She loved seeing her niece Zane.

David went to a family gathering and enjoyed a pool party.

Heather C. is attending church camp this week with her mother.

Rex went up North with his parents and enjoyed every minute.  Rex will also be attending his family reunion Saturday.

Rick has stayed with his parents at a campground.

Roger went up North with his mother for a few days as well.

This is just to mention some of the latest visits, with even more planned.  Hope everyone is enjoying the weather.  We asked for a nice warm summer and it looks and feels like we certainly got it!

Is that a New Bench??? Betcha…Betcha:  A new bench was recently installed in front of Group Living.  The attractive heavy-duty brown bench was cemented into the ground and has been put to much use already in its short life.  It looks like it belongs and is a great addition to the grounds.

Painting and Patchwork:  There is painting being done inside of Group Living as well.  Some patchwork in the kitchen and a couple of bathrooms.

Hey That’s Cool:  At Group Living, air conditioning repair was necessary already this summer, but no worries, the fix is in and everyone has been sufficiently cooled.

Hearthstone Happenings

Baseball and More Baseball

Saturday, June 26th found Melissa, Linda, Shelley, Mike, Dave F, and Ralph at the Lansing Lugnuts Baseball game for a great evening of baseball with fireworks following.  As usual, everyone had a great time!

The Loons were on fire in Midland on July 8th.  They are currently leading their division.  The Loons beat the Lansing Lugnuts 4-2.   Andy, Ralph, Tony, Lana and Shelley stayed dry as the showers past the group bye so that was great news.  Plus they saw Detroit Tiger Legend Willie Horton who was present at the game to sign autographs and to throw out the first pitch.

Be sure to check out the pictures available now on the QLS Web-Site.

Special Olympics Happenings

FLINT TIGERS

Dave F., Dan L. and Dan S. started softball practice on Thursday, June 3rd. Practices are held each Thursday from 5-6:30 pm. at the Kearsley Park Softball diamond through

July 15th.

In past years, the season would finish with the State Softball Tournament held on July 16-17th in Canton, MI.

This year an additional tournament has been added for July 31st in Kalamazoo. 12 teams, including our very own Flint Tigers, will be participating in a daylong competition at the Versiuis/Dickinson Softball Complex in Kalamazoo. Both events start @ 9am.

Best of Luck to Dave, Dan, and Danny.

Sweltering Heat Postpones Start of 2010 Golf Academy

On July 7th, Lana, Matt, Mei, Patty and Brett were waiting with golf clubs and bottles of water in hand for their rides to the first practice of this year's Area XIII Golf Academy Session. At 5:30 the practice was cancelled due to excessive heat. The Academy is held on Wednesdays, from 6-7pm at Pierce Park Golf course through August 4th.

Giving Back to the Vehicle City

A ray of sunshine was all that anyone in attendance at the 2010 Sloan Auto Fair hoped for the weekend of June 26th-27th.

Rain was in the forecast, but that didn't stop Lee. With umbrella in hand, he headed to the Sloan Auto Fair to volunteer a few hours of his time.

It appears the gloomy weather stood in no one’s way this year as the Sloan reported a record number of registered vehicles. Many different makes and models of cars, trucks and motorcycles were there for the viewing.

Lee received a free T-shirt and dinner coupons for his volunteering.

Lee also helps with other community events, such as the Flint River Clean-up Day and the Crim Festival of Races.

Way to go Lee!

Are We There Yet? / Are We Still In Michigan?

1,243 Miles

Yes, that is actually how many miles David L., Brett, Mei, Dave F., Brad and Beth traveled from Flint throughout the Upper Peninsula from June 20th-24th.  The weather could not have been better, and yes it was all Pure Michigan.  Particular points of interest were:

ü       Mackinaw to Tahquamenon Falls

On the way up lunch was in Mackinaw City then on to Tahquamenon Falls State Park to view the upper and lower falls.   These falls are one of the largest falls east of the Mississippi.

ü       Munising & Pictured Rocks

Two nights were spent in Munising.  While in Munising everyone enjoyed the Pictured Rocks Boat Cruise.  This is a 37 mile adventure in the clear blue green waters of Lake Superior to view the rock formations up close and Spray Falls.  The Glass Bottom Shipwreck tour was described as: “unbelievable”.

ü       Marquette, Ishpeming & Negaunee

On their way to Houghton, stops were made at the Marquette Maritime Museum, U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum in Ishpeming and Negaunee's Michigan Iron Industry Museum.

ü       While in Houghton & Copper Harbor

Upon arrival in Houghton the group toured the Quincy Mine were they rode the Midwest's only cog-rail tram.   Then it was on to Copper Harbor for dinner and to see the Light House.  Of course each stop had the opportunity for some shopping!

ü       Beautiful Baraga County

The next stop was in Baraga County to see the six stories "Shrine of the Snowshoe Priest".  From there it was onto Escanaba for a Chinese Buffet before seeing the Sand Point Lighthouse and Coast Guard Museum.

ü       Returning on Michigan Highway 2

On the way up the group traveled M-28/41 west to Copper Harbor and on their return to Mackinaw City for the night they traveled going east on M-2.  Along M-2 they viewed about 50-miles of beautiful coastline!

While there are so many more memories that could be checked off, time and space does not allow us to do so.  As a real keeper for a possible future trip, one thing is for sure…Pure Michigan lived up to the reputation of being a Water Wonderland!  Be sure to check out the pictures available now on the QLS Web-Site.

Once again, lets thank the committee Sydney McCay, Marleen Borland, Jenny Reibel and Mary Jane Veit for a job very, very well done!

Mark you calendar now for next year’s event on June 18th, 2011.  Same time and place!

Emergency Action Planning

At their May In-Service, staff members learned of the three ways to best address Environmental Emergencies:

·        Preventing

·        Preparing

·        Responding.

It was quickly noted that all three words are verbs denoting ACTION. While not all situations can be prevented, proper preparation and response is vital to any emergency.  As the old adage goes: “An Ounce of Prevention is worth a pound of Cure”.   A full listing of the QLS Emergency Action Procedures highlighted below were briefly reviewed:

      • Automobile Accidents
      • Bomb Threats
      • Earthquakes
      • Electrical Failure
      • Elopement
      • Emergency Repairs
      • Explosions

Workshops Issue  Request

Limit Non-Emergency Absences

On June 1st, Quality Living Systems received a letter from a workshop in which they requested that clients be scheduled for routine Doctor and Dentist visits during NON-workshop hours, M-F, after 2:30 p.m.

Budget constraints were cited as the reason for the request and the need for as many contact hours with the client as possible.

It was also noted that the client could benefit by helping to teach them the importance of not missing work time, seen as beneficial as clients get jobs in the community and show a greater value for the importance of how business performs as it relates to work time.

Cedar Point 2010

Another Success Story

For many years, television and radio ads called out: “Get to the Point”.  On Tuesday, June 15th , 31 clients & staff did just that and can now share that they: “Got to the Point, Cedar Point, Sandusky, Ohio”.    At 6:30 a.m. the Blue Lakes Charter Bus arrived at the GLF parking lot to load up GLF/Paragon & SILPer’s for a sure day of fun and thrills!

At the “Point” there is always so much to see and do.  From the Big Rides to the big shows such as Country Music Tribute or the long time favorite:  “Snoopy on Ice”.

Perhaps the biggest news to come out of the day was the Weather that wasn’t. Though predicted to rain with a 60% chance, barely a sprinkle was felt on the overcast day with temperatures hovering in the comfortable 70-75 degree range.  As it turned out the forecast apparently discouraged some would be travelers and the Park was not as crowded as it might otherwise have been.  One group even reported having walked right up and right onto the Magnum Roller Coaster.

The group made it home before 11:00 p.m. to rest after their big day.  Be sure to check out the pictures available now on the QLS Web-Site.

Family Outing… Jim’s Mother was able to come to Michigan to accompany him to his cousin Kelly’s graduation open house.  The event took place on June 13th and Jim reported that he had a great time!

Parking Lot Olympics…On May 28th Brad, Jim & Crissy attended a Special Olympics Fundraiser hosted by McLaren HMO.  The athletes were asked to participate in Parking Lot Olympics.  Brad excelled in the “Horse Shoe Throw” and Jim became an expert at the “Bean Bag Toss”.  Meanwhile Crissy tossed a few Frisbee’s, yet she found her niche in talking with the employees. There was quite a spread of various foods for the athletes. Thanks to Jerry Daunt of Area XIII Special Olympics for inviting our athletes to attend such a memorable day!

Schools out for Summer…Schools out for Summer.  Though not out completely, Chanon, DJ and Brian started a break from School on Friday June 4th.  They are off for two weeks, and then they will be on a summer schedule, 2 weeks on & 2 weeks off Monday – Thursday.  They are excited about the extra things they would like to do while off from school.

Improvements…

-The cement patio behind the Staff Office of Paragon with cracks and heaving became necessary to replace. Subsequent to their breaking up and removing the cement from the old one, “All Weather Seal”, installed an attractive brick patio that should last for many years to come.

-The trees and bushes have all been trimmed which makes a big difference to the grounds.

-There is also some painting that will be taking place around both facilities.

Several perennial plants were added to the landscape at Group Living and Paragon.  Take a look around and see if you can spot any of the latest improvements…

Summer Celebration…

The Summer Celebration Committee is busy working hard on preparations for our Annual Picnic.  Hope everyone has marked there calendar and are planning to attend.  It is always a great time.

“On Top of Ole Smokey”

May 18th brought an early morning for Melissa, Lana, Andy, Tony, Ralph, Mary, Sherry, John, Mike, Matt, and Linda as they headed out at 6:00 am for Pigeon Forge, TN for 4-days and 3-nights in the Smokey Mountain region.

The vans arrived at the High Noon Lodge (see posted pics) that was located about 5 minutes off the parkway.  The lodge was beautiful, complete with 9-bedroom, 8 of which had their own private baths plus 4 had Jacuzzi’s.

Clients enjoyed fantastic grilled dinners of steak, hamburgers and hotdogs while staying at the lodge as well as a dinner show at the Dixie Stampede owned by Dolly Pardon.  One day the group traveled through the Smokey's to Cherokee, North Carolina where they had a picnic lunch, did some shopping and then had the opportunity to visit and dance with some of the Cherokee Indians.   A morning was also spent at the Elvis memorabilia exhibit and shops where everyone had a lot of choices for souvenirs.  Down time was filled by being in the 6-person hot tub, playing pool or watching videos or just taking in the breath taking vistas while sitting on the deck and rocking in the rocking chairs while at the lodge.

It was a great trip and the weather could not have been any better!

The Midland Loons lost 4-0 to the Quad City Team on June 3rd but it was a great baseball night.  The weather was just right for Mary, David L, DeeAnn, Glen, John and especially Mike since he was celebrating his birthday!  Thursday night tickets are a package of 6 in celebration of the Detroit Tiger Legends.  At each game ticket holders receive a bobblehead.  Everyone received a bobblehead of former Detroit Tiger Great; “Cecil Fielder”.

MALA Conference

Jamie and Jason attended the Michigan Assisted Living Association Conference on May 5th in Lansing.  As part of Social Work licensing regulations they are required to annually receive continuing education training hours.  At the conference they expanded their knowledge base on some of the following topics:

  • Determining if clients are displaying signs of Alzheimer's
  • Ethics in relation to residential treatment
  • Understanding human behavior.

They were also given the opportunity to network with other providers in the area to help better meet the needs of the clients they serve.

It was determined that there is a great deal of information to be learned in the recognition of Alzheimer's and Dementia in adults with Down Syndrome.  Both Jason and Jamie look to forward to learning more on this important topic at the conference QLS will be hosting on September 9th.

Michigan Smoke Free Law

Non-smokers will breath a little easier thanks to a new statewide smoking prohibition effective May 1st, for most public places.

Though the impact will be most recognized in bars and restaurants, Group Living and Paragon will also be required to abide by the new law.  At each facility, smoking, which has long been prohibited by policy will now be supported by the tougher new law as well.

Also in keeping with the law, those smoking on the grounds are required to stay away from facility entrances, at least 15’ according to the supporting policy.  The cooperation of those who smoke is most appreciated!

In a culture of gentleness the goal is not to go for the behavior or the head but the heart.  In this way we can establish an environment where each one feels Safe, Engaged, Loved and Loving.  At their most recent in-service, staff members were reminded that each of us have the tools to support this culture through their very own Presence, Hands, Words and Eyes.

Remember Your ABC’s …

By Rebecca Bronson

On May 4th I was fortunate enough to attend the Michigan Assisted Living Association, MALA, Conference in Lansing.  While all of the workshops were interesting and informative, there was one clear favorite.  One that I will long remember and use with people was called “Remember your ABC’s.

The presenter was Ken Wasco, a Marketing and Research Leader with Gordon Food Service, GFS.  As a seasoned veteran, Ken was able to hold the audience’s attention as he shared about how each of us uses different parts of our brains differently.

As for which part you use most depends on your personality and results in your actions.

He went on to explain it this way:

If you are an “A” you tend to be organized, analytical and like things to be done the “right” way, which the “A’s” believe they hold the patent on.

The “B’s” tend to be funny, mellow people & creative thinkers.  Or as Ken points out, they are the “A’s” worst nightmare.  This is because the “A’s” believe things must get done now, whereas the “B’s” as procrastinators, also believe things must be done as well…eventually.

The “C’s” tend to get dumped on by both the “A and B” types.  This is because they equally use both sides of their brain.  They tend to be the ones that everyone shares their problems with.  Ken noted that statistically these people often suffer higher depression in that they don’t vent very well and are the listeners.

Perhaps the best part of the session was that we were then led in taking a short test.  As a result we were able to determine which kind of thinker we tend to be.  It was noted that “A’s tend to marry “B” thinkers.

While there were many humorous anecdotes shared, the bottom line was this.  There is often no one clear right way to get things done.  Everyone contributes in their own special way, often times regardless of ones own definition of “right”

So the next time you get mad over something done “wrong”, remember it may just be the other persons version of “right”!

Keeping our Facilities Fit…

In the Spring time, it starts with routine maintenance at both facilities:

  • Return the lawn furniture
  • Spray for bees and bugs
  • Clean out the furnace rooms, etc.

Next, we focus on Special Projects:

  • Professional carpet cleaning at Paragon.
  • Service Fire extinguishers
  • Refurbish Recycle Bin

At GLF-

  • Repair Refrigerator & Dishwashers
  • Replace Range Hood, etc…
  • etc.

The list will not be completed with the Spring season but is on-going to ensure each facility is in good working order. It will also help with the MSHDA Physical Plant Audit on May 17th, and CMH Audit on the 21st.  The ongoing efforts of all involved are appreciated, especially as inspection days are fast approaching!

Keeping Ourselves Fit…Aerobic Exercise Class

On Tuesday, April 20th Ann Stolz started an exercise class for QLS clients.  The class meets on Tuesday’s at 4:30 in the pavilion. If the weather turns questionable it will be held inside of GLF.  So far the classes have proven to be well attended & highly successful.

  • EKLC Alumni Party

On Friday, April 23rd, John, Mei, Patty,Tony, Andy, Dave, Danny and Mary S. attended the annual alumni party @ EKLC. Thank you to the EKLC alumni committee for continuing with this great tradition.

  • Exercise Night @ Group Living -by Silper Lana L.

On Tuesday, April 27th, Patty, Linda, Debbie, Dan and Lana went to Group Living to exercise. It was awesome dancing to the different music CD's! We would like to say thank you to Mrs. Stolz for a job well done!! (Ann Stolz,a QLS Family Member, has so graciously volunteered her time to head an exercise class at GLF on Tuesday's from 4:30 - 5:00pm)

·         CMH Dance - Local Dance Theme from Other side of the World

A Night @ the Orient was the theme for this year's CMH dance, held on Friday, May 7th at the Perani Arena. The downpour that ensued outside did nothing to dampen the spirits of Ralph, Tony, Mei, Patty, Brett, Matt, Dave, Andy, Linda, Shelley, Mary, Dan and Deb as they all enjoyed dancing, dinner and socializing with friends.

SILPERS a Sporting Bunch ...

“Baseball & Hockey Favorites”

 “Go Nuts”

That is what one could hear on Saturday Night, May 1st from Andy, Dave F, Ralph, Tony, DeeAnn and Glen as the Lansing Lugnuts Single A Baseball Team beat Ft. Wayne in a close one in the 9th, 3-2.

Not only was the game a close call, but so too were the planned fireworks as rain and wind were both evident at times throughout the game.  Fortunately however, the weather improved and soon the fireworks display was in full gear, lighting up the sky to everyone’s delight!  In the end the evening could be described as a real Win/Win event!

The “G” Men

Lets play Hockey!!!  On April 17th, according to Lana, her and her friends Ralph, Tony, Dave F, Andy, DeeAnn and Glen saw an awesome game when the Generals played the Muskegon Lumberjacks at home.  The Generals went on to beat Muskegon 3-2 and according to Lana, it was a ‘nail biter’.  This game won the Generals a spot closer in the playoffs.

April 27th brought Mary, Shelley, David L, Danny, Dave F, Andy and Mei to the Perani Arena for Game #3 of the playoffs between the Generals & the Lumberjacks.  The Generals won the game skating to a 4-1 win.  The Generals scored 3 points within 29 seconds to create much commotion from the G-Men fans.

Thursday, April 29th was playoff game #4 with DeeAnn, Glen, Matt, Brett, Mike and John in attendance for some Flint Hockey but the Generals could not muster another win.  They lost to Muskegon 5-2.  Now the Generals are down 3 games to 1 in the playoffs.

We were back on the ice in Flint with the Generals for playoff game #6.  Patty, Mei, John, Mike, Lee, DeeAnn, Glen, Andy, Dave F, Brett, Danny and David L came out on the Tuesday, May 4th must win night and that is what they saw.  The Generals beat up on Muskegon with a 5-2 win and pushed the playoffs into a 7th game in Muskegon, that the Generals went on to win!

Latest Edition of Home Improvement

This latest edition of Home Improvement finds preparations for warmer weather (IF it ever arrives) being made.  Mike and John's deck floor has been sanded and re-stained. The lattice base has been replaced with a very handsome wood slat base.  Kevin Collins did a great job on these upgrades.

Air conditioning units @ Matt and Brett's house and @ Patty and Mei's house recently received routine maintenance and cleaning service.  Both units are all set to provide comfortable cooling in the warm summer months.

PEER SESSIONS HAVE BEGUN

The first peer session of the year was held on Wednesday, April 28th. All Silpers are required to attend.

The meetings are held to build/reinforce skills in community and personal safety, leisure planning, interpersonal relationships, etc.

Meetings are facilitated by Hearthstone staff, NCSS Support Coordinators and have also included community members in past years.

Additional meetings will be held @ Matt/Brett's house on Wednesdays, May 12th & 26th as well as June 9th.

Stimulating Approach to Staff In-Service…

A fun exercise was used to launch the most recent Staff In-Service on a series of serious & strenuous topics. The staff was asked, “Lets suppose for a minute that you are asked to be a QLS Ambassador of goodwill to a foreign land?” What about a college campus?  How about closer to home, right where you work; sharing with clients, families, other staff or the public at large?

Regardless of the level or location it was agreed that it is vital that an Ambassador/Representative be caring, well informed and able to clearly communicate the message of QLS.   Staff then reviewed the following:

 Guiding Principles

Specifically the QLS Mission, Vision, and Values, Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Policy & more.

Strategic Plan

The group discussed the thorough guide that details some general and twelve very specific measurable goals.  Also discussed was the relevance of the Goals to QLS and each one present.

Formal Complaint Policy

The road map to addressing complaints and concerns was reviewed.  It was noted that the QLS Complaint Process is written, timely with No retaliation or barriers.

In addition to successfully passing a review Quiz on the materials presented, each person was presented with colorful business cards to use in representing QLS, as well informed Ambassadors of goodwill & true caring!

Food for Thought…

The DASH

By Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to Speak

At a funeral of a friend.

He referred to the dates on her tombstone

From the beginning…to the end.

He noted that first come the date of her birth

And spoke of the following date with tears.

But he said what mattered most of all

Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time

That she spent alive on earth

And now only those who loved her

Know what that little line is worth.

So think about this long and hard:   Are there things you’d like to change?

For you never know how much time is left  That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough

To consider what’s true and real

And always try to understand

The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger

And show appreciation more

And love the people in our lives

Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect

And more often wear a smile…

Remembering that this special dash

Might only last a while.

So when your eulogy is being read

With your life’s actions to rehash,

Would you be proud of the things they say

About how you spent your dash?

Spring has arrived as evidenced by the warmer days and plants that are popping through.  There is green showing up around the buildings and around the pavilion.  Some blossoms are even beginning to show.

Kudos to the Sargents for allowing us to have some of their beautiful perennial plants, they so graciously shared.  The  new trees are showing signs of life as well.   It is such a great time of year.  Currently both facilities are are in the process of spring cleaning as well as changing out seasonal clothing.

Hopefully, everyone will get outside and enjoy the fresh air and activities.  Welcome Spring!

Scouting Out a Good Time…

The Shooting Star’s Fun Day

By Staff Member Barb

The date was March 14th and what a Fun Day it was.  About eighty Scouts in all were on hand to join in the fun.  Although marked by a cool blustering rain, the mood was not dampened by the weather!

There was plenty of food for all with cake and ice cream as well to celebrate the Birthdays of a couple Scouts.  After Brunch the party continued in the nearby Gym with music, dancing and a chance to mingle with friends that may not have been seen for a while, or to make new ones.

Whatever the case, it was clear that there was plenty of fun to be had on “Fun Day”, and many expressed their enthusiasm for the event again next year!

RED ZONE/BLUE ZONE What Is this?

On Monday, April 5th the City of Flint started its bi-weekly garbage collection. The entire city was mapped out into either a RED or BLUE zone.

Silp staff have been working with Silpers to determine his/her particular zone, purchase an additional garbage can, note the collection dates on calendars and offer suggestions to alleviate the garbage pile up. Some suggestions offered include flattening boxes/bottles and rinsing out cans and bottles.

Currently consideration is being given to joining in an area recycling program.

An Abundance of Activities

Holidays offer Time of Real Celebration

Mei started her celebrations on Good Friday by joining her church members in a potluck dinner prior to Good Friday Services. She was so excited about this that she told her family not to pick her up because she wanted to go to the dinner and worked with staff to put together a fresh fruit salad to bring. On Sunday, she joined Mike and John at Linda and Shelley's for a Honey-baked Ham dinner with all the fixings including not just an apple pie but also cherry pie. Mei along with Mike and John were thankful that Linda and Shelley were good hostesses and sent all of them home with leftovers.

Lee had a Passover meal twice. He joined all of his family for a Passover meal on Monday, April 5th. His Dad has now returned from Florida and Lee was very glad to see him again. Then on Tuesday, he was invited over to partake in another kosher meal with an area Rabbi and his family. Lee talked about all of the great food enjoyed over the two days.

Bowling – Terminators Term is Nearing End

After a two-week hiatus for the Holidays, the Terminators bowling league has just one more week left in their season. Saturday, April 17th will be the last day. Then, on May 1st at 1:00 p.m., the Bowling Banquet will be held at the Masonic Temple.  While SILPERS do enjoy the season, many are happy to see it end as they begin to plan activities to participate in over the summer months.

Hockey – “Those Flint Generals…”

GAME 1 - It all began on Sunday, February 21st when Mei, Patty, David L., Dave F, Dan and Debbie watched a great Flint Generals game against Muskegon. Going into the third period, the Generals were down 6-3.  Staff was starting to anticipate an early departure especially when the Lumberjacks scored a 7th goal early into the third period. The Generals then made four unanswered goals to tie at 7 late into the third period. However, it was then that the game was delayed for many minutes as a pane of glass replacing. Unfortunately, this halted the Generals momentum and the Lumberjacks came back to score an 8th and final goal of the game. What A game this one was even despite the loss.

GAME 2 -Flint Generals vs. Bloomington on February 26th. by contributing writer Brett-  As of Friday, the following Silpers, Dan, Brett, Dee, Glen & Matt went to a Flint Generals hockey game. It was an all right game vs. The Prairie Thunder considering we lost 5 to 2!

GAME 3 - Generals Game by contributing writer Lana

On Friday, March 12, 2010 the following Silpers, Linda, Patty, Mei, Lana, Shelley, & Matt saw an AWESOME Flint Generals game. It was followed by a few fights. We also heard a very excellent high school band from Davison. They played all night long! Our Generals looked awesome and played awesome! We won in a nail biter 2-1. Way to go Generals! We all had a great time!!

GAME 4 -Flint Generals vs. by contributing writer Staff Member Megan

All SILPER'S in attendance for the March 31st game were smiling from ear to ear while walking out of the game where Flint Generals defeated Bloomington 6-4. In attendance were DeeAnn, Glen, Dave, Andy, David L, Mary, and Sherry. Everyone enjoyed themselves as they watched in amazement how the Generals fought to come out on the winning end. Overall it was a great game with plenty of sweet treats. I do believe that the ultimate sweet treat in the end was for DeAnn who FINALLY made it to a WINNING Generals game, just hours before her April fools birthday

Cross Country Trip - MATT takes to the SKY by contributing writer Matt

On Thursday, April 15, Matt and his mom are going to San Francisco, CA to visit his brother Tom, John and the two dogs.  (This does not begin to show Matt's excitement about the entire trip.  He has been talking about it for months. We will get more details after he returns on Monday, April 19th)

Computer Class Available

Jamie recently had the opportunity to take a client to the Disability Network to see some of the programs that they have available for clients.  One program that was of interest was a computer class that runs twice per week for 8 weeks.  The class starts with the basics such as turning on the computer and how to use a mouse.  Ultimately, you also learn how to send email and compose Word and Excel documents.  There is a fee for the class but if there is a referral from an outside agency such as Michigan Rehabilitation Services, they cover the cost.  It's always nice to learn about resources available in our community.

 Tootsie Rolls Tops The News

The Annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive is just around the corner.  This year it’s the weekend of March 26th-28th.  Please be generous.  Over the years Quality Living Systems, who provides services to those with intellectual disabilities, has been a recipient of monies collected during this drive by the Knights.  Last year alone, QLS received dollars totaling almost $4,000 from the various councils.

In appreciation for all of the hard work and support that the Knights do during this fundraiser, QLS recently presented plaques to the following councils:

      • Council #12090 –Our Lady of Guadalupe
      • Council #6742  -Holy Family/Grand Blanc
      • Council #10170 – Holy Redeemer/Burton
      • Council #4090 – Davison

For a number of years now, QLS staff and clients have assisted the Davison Council, by providing manpower at the Kroger store on the corner of Center and Richfield Roads from the hours of 10:00 am - 6:00 pm on Friday.  Everyone enjoys donating his or her time for a good cause.

Christmas in March –

It’s never too soon to SHOP

As if Christmas in July doesn’t sound strange enough, how about Christmas in March?

Well not exactly, but Christmas shopping has begun in March.  The Residents at Group Living and Paragon do a gift exchange each year and the purchasing of gifts normally scheduled for late Fall early Winter got an early start this year having already taken place.  Why shop so early?  By taking advantage of current specials the group was able to save over $700.00.

Even though it is said that the early bird gets the worm, the best news is that there will not be any worms found in these packages, only great deals and another Mission Accomplished!

q       Gatlinburg, TN    - May 18th -21st

q       Michigan U.P.  - June 20th -23rd

q       Southwest Michigan - June 29th -30th

Stay tuned for more information and some fabulous photographs as the trips are taken, memories made and one another’s company enjoyed.

Finally, Some went…

 “Wii, Wii, Wii,

all the way Home”

This is the tune that Danny was singing in February as Danny, staff and his parents tried to locate a Wii within 250 miles of Genesee County. Several trips, phone calls and on line search’s finally located a Wii for Danny as well as Brett. After a few delays in the setting up of the systems, both Danny and Brett are having fun Wiiing.

Hearthstone is still seeking a donation for  a Wii game system and accessories. While Danny and Brett are fortunate to have had the funds for the systems, many SILPERs are not. Staff believe that everyone would benefit from the use of the system, and are trying to get one system donated to start teaching SILPERS how to use it. The benefits to everyone would be great - physical and mental exercise, healthy competition, camaraderie, boredom buster & yes even a  laughter machine.  The possibilities are numerous. Please contact Leisa or Denise if you are able to make a donation. The systems are once again available locally.

Firing on All Pistons…

Produce Overtime Win!

This month’s cover photo captured Andy and Dave at a Piston’s Game.

They could not have seen a more exciting game than the NBA game Sunday, March 7th at The Palace of Auburn Hills.  The Detroit Pistons managed to beat the Houston Rockets in a fun and competitive contest.  An overtime period was needed to break a 102 tie after regulation play had ended.  The Pistons won 110 to 107.

Andy and Dave not only enjoyed some good eating at the Palace, but received a bobble-head and a Pistons T-shirt.

Group Living & Paragon News

Love is in the Air…   or are they only arrows shot from acherub named cupid?   Whatever the case on Monday, February 15, 2010 residents from Group Living and Paragon donned some of their finest clothes and were transported to the
”Cupid Ball” sponsored by the Davison Parks and Recreation Committee.  Whether or not anyone felt the Love was not clear, but what was abundantly clear is that everyone had a good time. Many reported having enjoyed the dinner and dancing the night away!

Super Bowl and Farewell Party…

On Sunday, February 7th Paragon hosted a Super Bowl as well as a farewell party for long time resident and friend Mei, who would be moving into the QLS Hearthstone (SILP) program.  Everyone enjoyed subs and salads together and cheered for their favorite team.  It was reported that by the end of the party everyone’s favorite team was the underdogs turned winner, the New Orleans Saints.

Also on the Move…

Look who has gone to Paragon?

On Tuesday, February 16th, Quinyada made the move from Group Living Facility to Paragon.  She was very excited about the move and having her own bedroom.  She is also looking forward to using the skills she has already acquired as well as having the opportunity to learn more.  Congratulations to Quinyada.  Everyone at GLF will certainly miss you but wish you well at Paragon!

Look Out:  Sidewalks May Be Snow Covered, Slippery and Wet…

As many of you know the services of a professional snow removal company help to keep the GLF & Paragon Parking Lots clear.  However, Staff and Residents alike help out by shoveling the sidewalks.  A special thank you to all who HELP out with the arduous and continuous task of SNOW Removal.

Those observing unsafe conditions are asked to notify staff and/or Nancy immediately.

Some dates to look forward to:

-Fuddrucker’s – Feb. 25th,   4-8 p.m.

Hearthstone Happenings

In this issue, we are pleased to have contributing articles written by Silpers.

POST 4 Activities

By contributing writer Lana L.

The Scouts Post 4 met to see the Mott Girls Basketball team play Alpena on Wednesday, February 3rd. The girls played an exciting game as shown by the score, having won 71-65. Silpers in POST 4 are Lana, Matt, Andy, John, Patty, Debbie and Dan L. We would like

to thank Leisa for driving us to the game

Super Bowl Parties

Silpers do love the Super Bowl. To prove it one need only look around.  On Sunday, February 7th there were three separate gatherings among Silpers.

Linda and Shelley joined Dave and Andy at their house for made to order subs, chips, fresh veggies & dip, fruit, and fresh baked cookies. While all had a great time, it would depend on whom you asked whether the game was great. Right, Dave?

Over At Brett's

by contributing writer Lana L.

Lana, Melissa, Mike, John, Lee and Matt were treated to a wonderful game!!! Saints won 31-17. An all time first for the Saints. This was a real blessing after having gone through the natural disaster, Hurricane Katrina. We would like to thank Brett, Matt & Leisa. Thank you for a wonderful meal!  We congratulate the Saints!  (Staff would like to congratulate Brett and Matt. The two were very gracious and attentive hosts to their guests. “Way to go!”)

David L., along with his father, joined Danny over at his house. The party was much smaller than in past year's, yet all enjoyed great food and cheesecake for dessert as they watched not only the game but all those commercials too.

BEST WISHES MARY HELEN

SILP Staff and participants would like to extend their warmest wishes to Mary Helen. Although we will miss her, we will still be able to see her. Mary Helen recently moved from SILP to her new home in Clio where she will be offered greater assistance in fulfilling her day to day needs.

She will, however, remain a part of the QLS family. Jamie Terry of NCSS will continue to provide Support Coordination services to her. Mary will continue to participate in scouting events and socializing with her peers. We wish her the very best!

Volunteer Recognition

by contributing writer Lana L.

Melissa just recently put in 20 years of service at her volunteer job! Way to go Melissa! Congratulations!

On January 26th, the Cody Branch of the Flint Public Library held a pizza party to congratulate Melissa's dedication to service. She has worked twice a week at this branch cutting and sorting coupons for patron use, she also cleans book covers. She has made many lifetime friends. She was given a book bag, mug, pen and pin all related to books and the Flint Public Library.

Employment recognition

Mike received his 15 years of service certificate and pin from Pizza Hut in January. He is so proud of the work that he does at the Pizza Hut on Miller road. We are very proud of you too, Mike!!!

Welcome to SILP

Hearthstone participants and staff would like to welcome Mei, who recently moved from Paragon into a house in the community. As a participant in Hearthstone Mei is very excited about finally realizing her dream of living in the community. She is looking forward to living with her new housemate, Patty. Both ladies have known each other for many years and are looking forward to spending time together hanging out, playing games and of course keeping up their house. Staff members are looking forward to working with Mei to further enhance her independent living skills.

Old Time Flint Hockey

Ever hear the joke: “I Went to a Fight and a Hockey Game Broke Out”?   This quip, once used to illustrate the rough and tumble nature of Hockey, could also be used to describe the Flint Generals Vs. Bloomington Prairie Thunder Hockey game of Jan. 22nd.

The Flint Journal did their part to generate interest and enthusiasm by billing the game in advance as a night for fighting, and it certainly proved to be just that.

Even though the Generals lost to Bloomington in over-time, the crowd of nearly 3,200 in attendance felt that they received their money’s worth.

The main fight broke out in the team’s bench areas, which saw so many fists flying that one could not keep track of who was hitting whom.  When it was all said and done the fight lasted almost a quarter of an hour.

It was great to see the largest turn out of the season; reminiscent of the days when a ticket could not be found!   Andy, Dave Sherry, Patty, Lana, Brett and Matt all reported having had a great time at the Old Time Hockey Night.

Pistons Fail to Produce Magic

They do however Produce Good Time

The Orlando Magic was the guest opponent at the Palace on January 31st for a 6:00 p.m. game against the Detroit Pistons.  David L and Lee first made a stop at the Great Lakes Crossing for a little dinner before heading to the Palace for the game.  It was a close scoring game most of the evening but at the final buzzer, the Pistons had lost by 6.  That still did not take the thrill out of being there for David and Lee.

The score might have been a little disappointing but the outcome was not as the guys took advantage of a great deal having received a bobble head of Ben Wallace, a Pistons Tee-shirt and a gift card worth $7.50 each that could be used for food or apparel all included in their ticket price!

Speaking of Hockey- How does Hockey and Make-Up Go Together?

They may not have been able to repair the ice on November 25th, but two months to the day later on January 25th they were able to repair the missed game.  Dave F., Andy, Linda, Shelley, Mike, and John attended the Flint Generals make-up game on January 25th.  This same group had sat watching for an hour at Perani Arena that November evening in an unsuccessful attempt to repair the ice.  All enjoyed the make-up game even though the Generals lost to Muskegon  4-2, proving that Hockey and Make-up can in fact go well together.

Birthday Dinner Celebration

It has been said that the arrival of the Red Robin is a sign to celebrate the arrival of spring.  It can also be said that the Red Robin Restaurant can provide a great setting for a time of celebration even in winter.

On January 28th Dave F. took his housemate Andy out for dinner to celebrate Andy's birthday.  Andy enjoyed one of the gourmet burgers at Red Robin.

In the end it was not only the Red Robin Mascot who was smiling.  The attention he received at the end of the meal with a complimentary sundae and the singing of Happy Birthday by several waiters brought big smiles to Andy's face.

New Century Support Services News…

New Century clients have gotten the bug....the flu bug and we have been working with clients on how to stop the spread of germs and how to avoid getting sick.  Here is some basic information everyone could benefit from.

How to Stop the Spread of Germs:

  • Cover your mouth and nose
  • Clean your hands often
  • Remind your children to practice healthy habits, too

Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing…

Cough or sneeze into a tissue and then throw it away. Cover your cough or sneeze if you do not have a tissue. Then, clean your hands, and do so every time you cough or sneeze.

The "Happy Birthday" song helps keep your hands clean?

Not exactly but it is recommend that when you wash your hands -- with soap and warm water -- that you wash for 15 to 20 seconds. That's about the same time it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice!

Alcohol-Based Hand Wipes and Gel Sanitizers Work Too…

When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used. If using gel, rub your hands until the gel is dry. The gel doesn't need water to work; the alcohol in it kills the germs on your hands.

Poker Update

In case you have not already heard the word is now out that the Poker Fund- raiser from February 10th-13th was a big success helping QLS to bring in over $4,000!!!!

A HUGE thank-you to all the volunteers that helped make for a most successful event.  It is clear that the event would not have been possible without our volunteers!

Volunteers are still being sought to assist with our March 6th-9th event.  Volunteers are asked to give as few as 3 hours of their time to help out.  Ann Stolz is assisting with coordinating the volunteers and is looking for someone to help her chair the events.  Those interested in volunteering or assisting with coordinating the events are asked to contact Ann at jstolz1569@aol.com or Jamie at newcenturyss1@aol.com
